Looking for some help with gearing. I have a Buick Regal with a 355, Saginaw 3 speed, stock rear end... It was raced last on a 1/3 mile asphalt track but I converted over to run a 1/4 mile dirt track.. Last year in the few races I was able to run I could hardly get the motor over 5,000 in 2nd gear and I'm wonder what other 1/4 mile guys are running for gears and rpms. Thanks

Weight of car and engine horses have always dictated what we run -- at 2850 and 450 horses a 600 total is close -- 3150--400 hp. is more like 650-700 total drive! There are 4 different ratios with a sag. 3 speed! Marking on the ft. input shaft will tell the second gear ratios! They run from a most un-common one ring with the higher gear to a very common slick shaft, then two ring- also not very common to the lowest geared three ringed input shaft! 373 and 411 are mostly used unless a 9 in. Ford Can be used for finding your happy spot if 390s gets you closer to the right total gear!!! If your corner speed is good it can make the difference in the RPMS down the track!!!

The horsepower is unknown, the last person to own the car didn't know anything about the motor really and the car has yet to be weighed. Both are things I need to learn that's for sure... Otherwise if I remember right I think there are 373 gears in it right now. Also I want to say the tranny is a no line. Guess I have to dig into this mystery machine before I get ahead of myself. When you grow up racing 4 bangers it sure doesn't help with a big car! Thanks for the info Flip

A old long bed Chevy truck with a 6 should have a three ring!!! Slick shaft a 373 are a bit high for 1/4 mile tracks unless super in the turns!!! 411 with slick is about right to run and turn 7500 or a bit less depending on tune and corner speed on a 2850-3100 pound car for us for years!!!

4: 11's or go to a 4:30 gear. 1/4 mile dirt you want to put the gear to it. 6.24 - 6.50 final range. A caviot to this is only to gear the car to what your comfortable spinning your engine to. moldy
