I am on a rookie team pit crew for a sportsman sprint. I have a few questions about the rear end and torque tube and ball. when we push the car through the compression we get clicking and vibration...this is what Ive found, the torque ball has about 1/8" movement front to back and the tube off the rear end slams it down. not sure about the movement or the slamming

You want enough play in the torque ball so that it spins freely but you don't want it to move up and down. Back and forth a 1/16" (front to back) isn't unusual--ours used to do that, too...but it never moved up and down. There are different brands--are you sure that this specific torque ball went with that specific torque-ball housing? When we bought our car, we ended up with a ton of parts and they weren't all interchangeable.
If you don't want to buy a new torque-ball, I've heard of people shaving the flat part of where the housing joins together to tighten things up a bit. That seems silly, though, because as soon as you replace the ball, it will then be too tight.
Also, there should be 0 play between the torque tube and the torque-ball...with grease (or whatever you use as a lubricant), it should be tight enough that there is no slop--the only resistance you should feel is the thickness of the grease when it is cold. Be sure to grease the tube liberally every time you take it apart and use the grease fittings on the torque-ball housing before every race and spin the ball as you do to distribute the grease around the entire housing.
I'm not sure if I answered your questions...feel free to PM me if you have any more. I went from 0 sprint car experience to being able to build one from a frame up. The hardest part was learning how to properly square the rear (the old-fashioned way without the modern tools they have today).
