Blowed my motor up! Friend drops his spare A-Mod motor at my place when I'm not there. Leaves written instructions= Chip at 7800 Time at 35 at 2500rpm. Do Not use vacume advance but Do Not lock out. Put in heavy springs. I need a little help in understanding. Do I just plug the pot or remove it? I've always ran vacume or locked out. I'm using HEI. Friend was on his way to his cabin where he turns the world off and can't be contacted. Any help would be appreciated- VintageMod

With out vacuum it is pined by the spring if rotor phasing is correct and it should be with nothing funny going on! Just plug it! A curve kit or not with heavy spring would make a difference! Stock changes 20 degrees from cranking! 20 more with stock vacuum advance! I normally put a stop in place on both with 10 degrees on each when running both and set timing at 5,000 at maxed out 38 with weaker springs and vacuum unplugged! Stronger springs and setting at 2500 may go higher than needed! More fuel may be needed if using your carb! If he left his carb on, jetting to timing may be close but I would check at higher RPMS and not exceed 38 max until you hot lap and check number 3 plug for at least 3 wet oily threads from the seating area to insure that its not too lean! I burn twice the fuel and run 57-60 degrees but keep a close eye on things! Leans out in a few laps if too much with headers glowing from unburned fuel heating them up and creating a draw or just not glowing and melting the ends off of the plugs! This is why A/C 45s are my plugs of choice! Lose a plug or a engine with better plugs! Most plugs run all the same so they are good insurance against a melted piston or gaskets and heads and blocks between 3 and 5 on a chevy 350! I set my timing at 5,000 by ear and back it up until you hear it change dropping back and then the with light as to tune next time! This matches the fuel to the engines other factors but I don't run a power valve in the carb and go up some 5 jet sizes so I can do this! You cant with a power valve and be correct! The slightest change in timing can open or close a power valves jetting for good or bad to stumble, load up or lean on top end when you need more fuel! Reading the plugs is the best way I know to set timing to match fuel burn correctly! I have good luck with barrowed things and my crew loans me with there engines to ensure a happy return! We all know a engines life is limited by its peers and not laps! Best of luck with your loaner engine!

I wish I had the instructions from our new MSD here at my placeā¦ the dizzy came with heavy silver springs.
We (rather I) set up my son's MSD with light (silver) springs, removed the vacuum canister, and set the initial timing @ 13 degrees. That SHOULD give us 34 total all in by 2500.
I still have to fine tune the timing.

A lot of horses in timing control! 28-34 is my low! Throw some more fuel at it and up the timing if compression is not causing pre-burn control and not giving all the burn stroke desired! I run low compression to leave room for more fuel! Run the engine colder to keep it from premature expansion before compression does it's thing! More expanding with less loss of horses to have compression by the burn! A longer power stroke burn! Harder to get burning cold and less compression to pre-heat and needs more time to catch up and burn! Thus the excessive timing! This leaves it all to happen in accord with piston speed latter in the stroke! More horses with less useless premature crank down force robbing horses and quality stroke burn timing degrees! I do run 93 octane and have a 100,000 plus volts of fire power with my HEI to get the job done! The how-to is in my other postings! Its just a country boy way of winning and has been for 35 years! Compression and racing fuel just wasn't getting it done! I never followed the pack at doing anything correctly by standards! You have to challenge everything as to horses to get ahead these days! Wish I had a Dyno instead of all these trophies! It must be nice to know before the fact if you did the right thing! It takes lead, Low, left, and rear, to hold traction with extra horses applied!
