As a rule of thumb most engines have more horses than torque! Not using it all on low-end and over geared trying to stay hooked by easing into it! Depending on where cam degree is now and valve lash along with geometry, is part of the cams profile! Advancing a cam to improve vacuum and coming off the valves a bit will usually up the torque but narrow the pulling range! Changing to a higher gear with more torque applied, ( with a healthy rear percent and dist. and carb modifications to aid in keeping it hooked ) has proven to pick up speed faster off the corner and all the way down the straight away for us! Playing around to find more horses instead of harnessing the ones you already have to make them work a bit harder for you is to me a big part of racing fun! You may still turn the same RPM's when running more MPH and quicker times! Never seems to be a end once started at changing things as to improving once not having to play with set ups! It can be very surprising what 2 degrees of timing(cam or dist.), 2 jet sizes or .002 at the valves can do when splitting profiles up down or both ways to gain torque! Set ups of torque curves can be fun too when getting closer to the front! Just buying the best doesn't work some times together as well as it should!
