Engine: 355 SBC IMCA Sportmod Claim engine
Cam: Steve Demo's, thats all I know.
Springs: PBM 3200 130#@1.750, no shims
Rockers: Comp Cams 1.5 roller tip
Studs: ARP screw in
Valve Covers: Tall
Oil: Brad Penn 20w-50
RPM: 6800
I've had this nagging problem of 'blueing' the pivot balls on the #1 and #3 cylinder rocker arms over the last 3 seasons I've been running my motor. At the end of each season I replace the rocker arms and pivot balls if they show any signs of worsening heat discoloration. Never had a problem with breakage up to this point, but my fear is that the motor is running at an increased risk of breakage. My friend built an engine this past year with similar spec's and broke studs on two occasions. They were left side studs.
So........I'm going to put a motor together for my uncles car this winter but am worrying about encountering a similar issue with stud breakage. We are trying to figure out some ways to get more oil to the left side of the valve train (without causing worse issues elsewhere). Was wondering if anyone out there has had similar issues and found solutions.
Right now we are thinking about putting a restrictor in the right side oil galley to force more pressure to the left side. We never have heat discoloration on the right side so figure it can give up some oil without problems. Also read that we should try Crane or another brand of rocker since comp may have some design or metalurgy problems that cause the issue. I have my doubts about this theory but anything is possible.
Your tech tips are appreciated.
