Reread my class rules and a 400 would be legal. Everybody else running 305 or 350.
Rules are: stock block, stock crank, stock rods, 4 valve relief flat top pistons, .410 cam lift, stock intake, stock heads (no Vortec or camel humps) 4412 Holley 500 carb, stock exhaust manifolds.
Would I be better off with a 350 or a 400? Class is pure stock type, long wheelbase cars (big Monte Carlos and Caprices). I am not sure how the 400 would do with short rods (never run one before).
Thanks for the help!

400 all the way would be better. Can't beat cubic dollars as they say. As long as you are not restricted on what carb you can run with the 400.

Have to run Holley 4412. Most guys out there run a VDL.

A bigger engine may get you into trouble, back in the day a lot of guys out here ran 400+ with same type of rules except the carb( worked q-jets) and if they knew how to be nice to the pedal they did well, but as most 400s they'd get hot and pop. Depending on your track is how I would go. Long and hammer down 400, short, dry, worry about off corner grip 355

That is great advice from leaf4life. Clearly laid out the drawbacks from running a 400.

Dollar for dollar, your aren't going to build cheaper than a 350. That being said, I would go with the 400. You can build more HP and torque, and do it so that it reliable. As for the driving tips, it will take more throttle control, but you will need to learn throttle control if you plan to run up front. The additional HP and torque is kinda like what some people say about guns - I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I would build the 400. In a pure stock class, HP and torque are a huge advantage. Chassis setup and driving ability taken out of it, the 400 would be the difference in winning. As for 4412. I ran a gauge leagal 4412, it was a VDL. Eng builder tested it on the Dyno against a cheater carb I had with biger bore. The VDL made 10 more HP. It cost$ but it is the only 2bl I will run. Thats my .02
Dave.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is a VDL 4412? The run a 4412 on a sport modified and had ours built by Kinetic Performance (Dayton Umholz) in NY. Most of my friends that run a 4412 have also had their carbs built by KP too.

No doubt the 400 will make more power in stock configuration. One thing to consider would be you have a cam lift rule. The reason why the guys at your track are running small is they can spin up quick and get to your cams powerband fast, or that they are not telling you the truth. Alot of the fast guys out here run smaller motors and spin them high( 6800-7200) and without a cam rule can make alot of power out of the corner and down the straight. Not saying a big motor won't make power, and its true that it can get you out of trouble( momentum wise) just something to think of. Also finding a good 400 block, a lot of them had head gasket issues and may be cracked, so it may be a good piece of advice to find a block already checked out by a machine shop, most engine machine shops may have one sitting on the shelf already for assembly

Most of my friends that run a 4412 have also had their carbs built by KP too. vdlfuelsystems.com/?p=76 VDL is the Manufacturer. And the carb I Dynoed it against was one of Daytons carbs that was highly modified. I like daytons carbs for the money you cant beat them. But it was gauge leagal from the top only. The VDL is 700.00 and will gauge check from top and bottom and will out perform every leagal carb and most no leagal carbs. Dave.

Always modified stock carbs with PV block-off and 83-86 jets on a .066 350 and turned 8 ,000 plus.
