A friend of mine has lost two engines in as many races this year - both because of broken valves. The only things that were transfered from one engine to the other were: intake manifold, carb, distributer, and headers. Is there something I should be looking for that might cause this? Thanks

What kind of retainers is he using, or is the same engine builder putting them both together? Also had a guy at the track that went threw 2 engines with valve problems because the eng builder was using the wrong kind of guides.

The first thing that comes to mind is wrong/bad guides. Next would be cheap valves.

First thing that comes to my mind is either valve bounce (anything over .025) will break even the best valves and 2nd is piston to valve clearance. Are there any marks on the other pistons that didn't have a failure? Are the valve seats beat up and have widened the 45 degree cut? is so that is a sign that says valve bounce

thought the website was discontinued, just stumbled on it really. The old page doesn't redirect you to the new site/forum.

He's kinda keeping me in the dark as to what, if anything, he's found. He put together a new motor and hasn't had any problems - so I think he's figured something out and is staying mum (probaly embarassed).

The new forum went up in its place nd it's cool and everything but we like here where it's a bit less complicated. I have too enjoyed your advice over the years so thank you for joining us over here too.

Just a few things to think on. Years have shone many things as to why! Clearance number one caused by slowed reaction by tight valve guides or use of positive seals causing oil failure, weak or wrong springs, rocker bearing binding, bending push rods, excessive heat on the exhaust valves, Cam degree and changing due to timing chain slack, excessive clearance on stems, dry fuel, excessive spring tension, seat bounce, and of coarse weak valves and luck!
