I've heard the expensive stuff sold at a well known racer supply company only lasted 4-5-6 laps then you had kind of burned thru it. Guess you would need another set of tires for the main, but whats the point if its only going to last 4-6 laps, and is illegal. The old "dirt Forum" had a thread of home made recipes, transmission fluid, paint thinner, diesel, and or a combination, soak them for days, then wrap them in plastic, keep them out of the sunlight, put them in sunlight, as examples, a lot of information and guesses were put forth, entertaining. I haven't seen a lot of teching for it in the 2 years. Grind and sipe if legal. That's all I've got.

The Old recipe from back in the day before you could buy softeners was 1/3 Acetone, 1/3 Trans Fluid, and 1/3 mineral spirits. You power wash the tire. Grind the tire to expose the fresh rubber then treat them. The Acetone opens up the pours of the rubber so the trans fluid can soak in. The Mineral spirits is just to thin the trans fluid. The tire gets harder as the oils are pulled out, so you are putting them back in. How soft depends on how you treat and how long. My car is faster on harder tires, so I just sipe them to get them to fire quickly, and they last longer, but if you want to store I tire over the winter, spraying them and wrapping them will keep them fresh for next season without really softening them. Just depends on how much and how long you soak them.
