My car is 25 to 30 LBS. over the minimum weight for ump rules. Do need to still need to worry about having the motor built up to a 700 or 800 hp engine or can i get good results with less ?

A very drivable 600hp will be plenty for all but the most hammer down conditions.

The Base line front running motors all seem to be in the 700hp range. We run a 18deg 400cid 700+hp motor and never got out motored even in hammer down. The SB2 Motors some guys are running are 800+hp, the common complaint with theses are they are too explosive and cant get a smooth flat torque curve, due to the nature and size of the heads no matter what cam grind is tried. Run what you got and can afford, but I dont think 600hp will run with the big boys on a weekly basis. We have to run against #3 & #5 in UMP National points every friday night, and 700+ is what it takes to compete.

2 replies with two different answers. I do appreciate it from both of you. In my situation as of right now, I'm going to go with what i have unless i get a second job or change classes. I like the mod class and want to see the car do better. The first motor in the car was tired, needed rebuilt i guess. Then the other motor i put in later didn't have near the cubes. The car is pretty light as i said but was hoping a fresh rebuild on the 400 i have will show some improvements.

It depends alot on your track. If they keep it super wet and hammer down you need that 700, or if you qualify you need it. But if you run mostly slick tracks or you have a driver that uses the gas like an on off switch you can be competitive with alot less(may run better w/ less if driver has on/off switch). Especially if you have a track that doesnt have the quality of cars that dave's has. My local track only had 8-10 cars most nights last season. Only 2 of those had hoss motors. Its a small quarter mile but they keep it hammer down. I had a 355 w/ spec heads that made 575 on alky(i was running it on gas) I never felt like the guys winning were out motoring me, just had a tough time getting it freed up enough getting in. Hindsight is 20/20, i know what i needed to do now.
Edit to add that i'm on grooved KK-704 tires not UMP hoosiers, also we do not qualify

I live in Indiana and don't know if you have seen or heard of lawrenceburg but that's where would like to run this summer. The track is a BIG 3/8's and goes slick for the most part. We don't qualify either normally But once the sprints are done there isn't much moisture left. Don't have the $ to win but getting into the top 5 to 10 would be nice if nothing else.
