My son will be running a WISSOTA midwest mod in 2014… requires a 4412 carb. We are planning on running gasoline… there are tons of carb outfits all of which build the "best" carb… what do you guys run?
We have a local guy here, an old friend of mine, who has been modifying Holley carbs for 30 years… may ask him, too.

Depends on the rules. I have a lot of experience with the "gauge leagal" 4412 and for my money the VDL is the best. Made more HP on Dyno than anything we tested. Even made more HP than modified "Cheater" 4412's. If I had to run a 4412 again, I would be VDL, hands down.

We have had really good luck with 4412s from Dayton at Kinetic performance. He is a little slow on getting stuff back, but does really good work at a great price.

Thanks… I've heard of VDL and the guy who ground an Olds cam for me last year likes Kinetic Performance. My engine guy likes Dorton but they aren't WISSOTA legal. We plan on building two race ready engines…
What about carb adaptors?

I ran Kinetic Performance for years, and they are good running carbs for the money like you said. But on the Dyno a gauge legal top and bottom VDL will make more HP than KP's Modified, non gauge legal carb, but its twice as expensive. When we ran for the National title in 2012, our carb was checked every race without fail, so it had to be right, and it had to perform against the non gauge legal carbs that never got checked. Have I run non gauge legal carbs? Sure, but that's when we weren't winning every night and being teched like crazy. So I guess you have to figure out what your wallet can afford and what your team really needs. AS for spacers, We liked the straight 4 hole phenolic spacers. The straight holes kept the velocity speeds up as much as it could before it got dumped into that big open plenum. The phenolic provides heat separation that the aluminum spacers will not.

We have been gauged quite a few times and never had any problems with our KP carbs. That was in imca Sportmod class.

Dayton will build the carb any way you want. I had him build one that was all coned out at the base plate, that is the one we tested against the VDL, so that obviously flowed more than his a gauge legal carb. But for that money KP is hard to beat. Speed Costs, How fast do you want to go?

Dave, Any tricks on getting stuff back quick from Dayton? I know in the past it usually took a few months and some pestering to get our carbs back. I ended up paying like $175 and I sent him a core 4412 and I got back a race ready one that we ran 2 seasons with no problems. Like you said just can't beat the price going through Dayton. I assume VDL is a little quicker. Is that the place out of Missouri that Joldersma uses?

I found a couple used 4412's today… $100.00 each. One is an older Wegner conversion… not sure on the other.

I picked up the carbs today… not really sure exactly what I have but I think I will rebuild them as-is and see how they work when we dyno the new engine.

Joldersma uses JDR.

I wound up taking the used carbs I bought to Al Gloueke in Green Bay, WI. Al's been in the performance carb biz for 30 years and is highly regarded in the area. He ran his mod at my old tracks a few times… it was good to see him again after a 25 year break in our friendship.
Turns out one carb is a Willy's conversion… the other is from an unknown supplier. I should get some news on the carbs pretty soon… we decided to have him do his usual 4412 mods (if needed) and new t-shafts, etc. This will give us a baseline and we can change things if needed during the season.

A 4412 stock with a power valve block off and 86 jets, new racing float and larger needle and seat won over 60 races for us! They even tested our fuel! 362 engine turning only 64-69 hundred. 3 states! Too big and loose your torque! Small intake and big heads keeps the vacuum cooling the air and extra fuel all the way, increasing flow above and beyond! Low compression goes high when expansion takes place during combustion! 150 lbs. is what won for us!IMCA Limited Sport Mod class rules forgot to rule out laws of refrigeration producing horses! Back in the day, when I could modify things we used 12 gallons of pump gas in a 20 lap race on a 1/4 mile track with my 2brl Chevy carb! The spark plugs were clean like new! Lots of horses left to corral in physics or shade tree technology!
