STOCK INTAKE WITH QUAD OR HOLLEY 4777.SOME GUYS THAT RUN THIS CLASS ARE TELLING ME TO RUN THE 993 HEADS WITH A 683 GEAR ON A 3/8 MILE TRACK TURN THE ENGINE AROUND 7200-7800.AM I BEING STEERED WRONG I JUST DONT THINK THE HEADS AND CAM WOULD PRODUCE GOOD HORSEPOWER AROUND THIS RPM?

I think that will get ya started. I believe the 487 or 487x heads are better then the 993's. gearing is close but is the track long straights with short corners or long sweeping corners? If the straights are long I would try a 6.50ish. Turn the motor over 7200 with that cam and heads is not really do anything other than put a strain on the internals.just make sure to match the torque band in the range your gonna need. There are a lot of options with the .425 lift cam but the duration is very important so you might want to consider that as well.

People always talk about the Max RPM because that's what they see on there tach. And yes, you arent making any power up there, but its about what RPM you are turning coming off the corner that matters. That's where you need to be in the proper RPM range. So you just have to turn it at the end of the straight. No one is passing at the end of the straight under power, they may out brake you, but you need it off the corner where it matters. So are you being steered wrong? I don't think so.

We run limited mod with 450 lift rule and 1200 at 12in. vacuum rule, same heads, 626 on quarter mile at 64-69 hundred with horses of a .060 350 (362) winning more than not in three states! We have turned up but was faster the more load that was put on the pulling range! Car weight comes into question in relation to horses! It all has to work as a package no doubt! A broad pulling range on a cam can sometimes be best with lots of gear but when piled up in one heap, higher gears keeps you on top!
