I have a probem with the power steering box on a mid-size metric. It turns fine to the left, but turning the wheels back to the right is considerably harder. I've never gone into a steering box, and I'm wondering what's going on in there that makes it work fine one way and not the other. And is it worth fixing? Is it something someone that's never had one apart and doesn't have any special tools for a steering box can fix? Thanks.

First thing I'd check is the check valve. It should have one on one of the ports? Not sure which one. If that clocks or sticks it will cause that,

If running a small quick-ner, Gears may have been damaged! If not the spool valve up top can have a bad centering spring! To be sure I have this correct, is it only from center or any time any where right! Jack it up and see if it frees up! We have had this with quick-ners gears worn in being over stressed tring to steer with out motor running sitting still! Complete box is the best way to go! Lower shafts can twist easy if wrecked and cause a bind also! Look at the splines on the pitman! A large box is best for durability!

Is this a new box and new problem? Sounds internal, and if it is just get a new one. I had a problem once that the reservoir supply line to the pump was to small and wouldn't move enough fluid, and caused a similar problem, but if this is a box and pump setup you have ran before, you can eliminate that. If you need a new box, I have had good luck with the PSC Motorsports Box's. I run a 600 series because they are 5 lbs lighter than the standard 700 series box's, but PSC has a good selection and you can get the ratio you want and the "T" bar valving you need if you are running a quickner. They also rebuild boxs, good tech help also. Dave. link

Well, no one is telling me to rebuild it myself. So I think I'll look at buying a new one. I was really hoping it would be a cheap/easy fix. It was my spare box (from a salvage yard). I put it in when the old one sprung a leak from a weep hole.

If the hole is the one used to remove the top of the pitman snap ring wire, a O-ring will fix that! Screw it out first to allow it to go or bump down, before removing ring! Remove the adjuster nut (left handed) use a Allen to screw it down out off the upper pinion holder as it lifts up , side it out of the pitman! Some may have to be bumped up from the bottom a bit to clear sliding off to the side! Ck for wear in flop of this upper holder before disassembly as the aluminum does wear if the front end was shaking! A 4 bolt top metric is best as we have had this O-ring problem too many times! Some aftermarkets have a steel upper top because of this!

It's not the 4-bolt type. It's the the round top type. I think I'm going to use it as a core for a rebuilt one - preferably the 4-bolt top style. I remember reading something about the round top type being the less desirable steering box.

Hey, the round top ones are the 605's, light weight, smaller out put shaft. 3.5 turns lock to lock. If you took a hit on one one of the wheels the output shaft 'could break. Find a Z, 805 box, it actually has a Z on the box. Roughly 1 turn lock to lock with quickener.
Hope this helps, Moldy

I just found out the pitman arm for the 605 box wont fit any other power steering box. Why is it that everything I have seems to be the "oddball" of the group? I got a rebuilt Z box from autozone - they were the only store in town that had one in stock. Thanks for all help.

1986 Monte Carlo SS and less than $120 before tax. I didn't pay a core charge, so I don't remember what it would have been.
