I've turned a stock block 383 8600 and never batted an eye about it. The rotating asembly has more to do with it than the block, unless you are making serious horsepower.

I ran a stock block 383 and turned 8300 and up for a 45 race season with no issues. It had billit main caps and a 4340 crank. Better have a good rotating assy, but the block is fine to use.

Back in the day! A 283 or 327 turned 12,000 with the good stuff and were 2 bolt mains and small friction engines of short stroke! Load on the bottom end comes from poor flow in design! Get rid of the friction and have the springs to keep up and set it free! I have turned 8000 with nothing but a cam of high duration and headers, all else was Chevy. It only lasted 13 years before I boosted the vacuum and sucked a rod bolt by lifting too fast. A daily driver and week-end drag car. Turned another 7600 2 nights a week for 5 years before it popped! Vacuum again was the culprit! Idle them up Guys if your going to turn them up! The Right cam is a must and retard it to death!
