Never have run one, but I can say the 4 blade fans seems to work very well for the whole weight/cooling effects. They came off old Chevy pickups. You can buy new in catalogs but I would spend the few extra bucks and buy the GM fan. Part number is 405442

Why? More weight on the nose of the water pump. Turns at a different speed than the pump. I personally won't risk it. JMO

If I understand what you are saying, the water pump and the fan can draw up to 50hp? Not sure about that. If they "freed up" that much horsepower, why don't upper level teams use the? USMTS, SUPR, DIRT to list a few.
Also, it's something else that can fail and you not know about it until it's too late. My money says the water pump will fail sooner with a fan clutch.
Like I said before, these are my opinions only.

Yes I have. In the 70's. It won't work, you don't keep the rpm's up to keep the fan ingaged so you don't have the air to keep the eng. cool.

It is just as bad as running a flex fan. 1:1, good shroud, decent pump and a four bladed fan is all you'll need. You can play with restrictors but you will be pulling your hair out by the end. Use distilled water and a couple caps of fabric softener. High pressure cap, should help. BUT a clutch fan- too heavy and complicated, keep it simple.
