We always ran them. A friend of mine didn't AND when most of the oil sloshed into the right axle tube in the turns, it cooked the rear to the point that there was fire coming out of where the pinion used to be.
It is relatively cheap insurance to ensure that there is enough oil in the center section all of the times. It also makes axle/hub changes a little less messy.

I always ran them on both sides in the 9" Packed the hubs with grease and never had an issue.
