My truck runs great for about 5 laps and then falls flat for about 2 seconds. Then it picks up and runs fine for a few seconds and falls flat again. This repeats until I pull off the track. I've replaced the MSD box, but it feels more like it's fuel related. I was thinking something was heating up and failing (hence replacing the MSD box). I have never had an engine vapor lock, but this doesn't sound like vapor lock symptoms to me. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds ignition related to me. Verify timing. Verify it's not moving around. Slipping dizzy gear, loose dizzy reluctor, excessive dizzy end play and excessive cam end play for example.

Do you run a fuel pressure gauge? A friend had the same type of problem this year, ended up the fuel pickup inside the cell had come loose from the fitting and every time the fuel sloshed the right way, the pickup sucked air at the fitting and the motor stumbled. IDK, something to check

I don't think it's anything in the distributer, because WHEN IT RUNS, it runs perfectly - even after it starts cutting out. I don't run a fuel pressure gauge, but I will probably put one in. I'll check the fuel cell. I'm starting to think that it may be low fuel volume (blocked/kinked line, bad fuel pump) causing it to run out of gas after five laps. I've already replaced the fuel filter, I have a spare fuel pump, and replacing the fuel lines is easy to do.

Bad fuel line, plugged filter, bad coil, shorted wire in the dizzy...

I had a similar issue, my fuel pump was loosing pressure randomly, I would without a doubt put a fuel pressure gauge in it so you can make sure it is staying where it should be. Not sure if you have, but also check your float levels, to me it sounds like its running out of fuel. I have also seen where some AN fittings will get a little bunged up and suck air in, they didn't leak fuel, but were sucking air in.

I appreciate the replies. I've got the truck torn down to replace the frame (it was that kind of year), so I won't get a chance to test the new fuel pump and lines for a while. Thanks again!

make sure the fuel cell vent is not restricted as you need air in to get fuel out

At what position on the track does this happen? I have had loose wires at switches and yes even a toggle switch to do this but the top of the fuel pick-up is usually the culprit or the bottom not being angle cut or too long of not weighted if using a hose inside the tank!

After replacing all the fuel line from the carb to the fuel cell, it turned out to be the pick up line in the fuel cell. The hard outer coating had come off of about 4 inches of it and it was sucking shut. It's always the last thing you think of - LOL.

Its the first with us now as countless fuel problems has led us to even find a red rag mid-season and we never use them as well as paint thinner added that caused a miss on new plugs after 8 laps! Some people hate loosing or others winning too often!
