What are you guys planning to be able to compete with the crate motors on the slick?
They seem to have a big advantage currently.

Everyone has there own opinion on this but here is my .02, the spoiler is the key, and nothing you can do will make up for not having the down force that the spoiler creates. Give me the spoiler, an open motor, and add 200 lbs to me if you want, id be ok with that. So without the spoiler, how do you generate several hundred lbs of extra down force that the spoiler provides? You dont. Put a crate in it and put the spoiler on and go racing until the next rule change.

Crate isn't an option for us. I guess we will just have to hope for a wet summer next year. Fortunately we run on 3/8 or smaller tracks so it takes a little bit of the sport advantage out.

Looks like the took the spoiler down from 3" to 2", hopefully that will help even the playing field a little on the big tracks.

its the same way at our track, 5 out of the top 6 were running a crate engine, the only one with an open engine in the top 6 that I remember was when jeff taylor was in town. Our track is dry slick 90% of the time. Hopefully the shorter spoiler will help even it out some.

Why not build a 450HP engine?

Exactly what I did, 400hp 355, 525hp 406, and I have a 283 with a forged crank, that I think will work great due to the fact it will have less torque. Just haven't decided what heads to put together for it, I think some vortec heads would work nice on that little engine.

Just my .005 cents. Lots of people have tried so called crate beater motors with not much luck for a number of reasons. The biggest reason is your still considered as an open motor so no spoiler. I agree with Racer96m that the spoiler just might be the needle in the haystack. I think Beatrice ran a race this year that allowed open motors a inch and 1/2 spoiler but never heard about the results.?

No spoiler for open motors at Beatrice, I think that was I-80 that allowed the open motors to run a shorter spoiler than the crate cars. The Beatrice special was dominated by crate cars, it will be interesting to see if those guys run crates again this year.

Your right, it was I-80. I don't think it made a big difference. Even tho I run my modified with the vintage guys I still like to keep up on information. We are allowed up to a 7" spoiler. I think taking away 1" from the crates might mean more than some think. I think it was Smokey Yunick that said there is a ratio for inch of spoiler x down force created. About all I remember is a 3" spoiler creates more then twice the down force of a 1-1/2" spoiler. If this is true they might be taking more of the crate spoiler advantage away then some think? Now we must remember that Smokey was the one who used to take a scale model of his race cars down to the creek behind his house to learn about aerodynamics. L.O.L. We all know the chevelle he took to Daytona didn't have any of the advantages he learned by playing in the creek. Anyway, good luck to you guys because I am not and never will be a" crate fan". If the rulebook took away my ability to be competitive with my homebuilt motor it takes away the pride I feel when it runs good and the chance to kick only myself in the butt when it doesn't. I am glad that in my old age I can still have FUN racing my way with the Midwest Outlaw Vintage Racers and leave the politics to others. I'll heed my grandsons advice now !! Grampa, get off the dang soapbox and put another log on the fire, you know the doc told you not to be climbing up on stuff !

We will see what the effects are. To me it seems like a little less down force on the back end might help free up the crates a little and actually make them faster. It they can run less gear and still get off the corner it will allow them to get more top speed before topping out.

Our limited rules once allowed a roof spoiler also! So we stuck a 1.5" angled strip up top! The car only bellowed and never picked up speed of the corner at all! I have never apposed rear percent by weight verses holding out a large hand, full time! If spring loaded spoilers were legal, this would work! A body jack may work on more rake! Hydraulic! They have to catch you first! RIGHT! I once saw a car with 600lbs on the rear. He was the points champion before spoilers with a lot of gear and a junk 327 that turned 8700 RPMs! We all will try anything to get to the front if legal!
