When people talk about angles on J-Bar is that putting a straight edge between mounts and reading the angle or use the straight part of the bar ? In doing so what would the maximum angle be not to exceed ? Is there a rule of thumb on how short in length the bar can be ? THANKS, VintageMod

From point A to point B is a straight line (mounting point to point) The bar shape or angle is of no consequence! Once fashioned on your car a angle may be assessed for reference and your car only! Measuring the pinion mounting location as to frame mounting bolt is the best way to look at it from the floor up! 3-5" is made into some bars when setting level on the longer part of the bar! Finding a free point of roll center while level or while keeping the same level or difference between the two measurements is the first thing to do and is key to a free roll-over as roll centers vary with every adjustment or change! Too much angle will hold the left side down and cause a tight drive-in if you want it to just do so or more angle while in the throttle can improve traction and steer if needed! A shorter bar is the extreme of both and needs a throttle to turn in most cases! A pan-hard bar is most forgiving and drivable but offers little traction unless mounted to do so with a certain set-up by pulling the right side down instead of rolling up of the left rear! moving around on each car testing is the only way to find and free every time you alter your car! Best left at a neutral 3"-7" spot that works for you!

Another aspect of a J-bar used in conjunction with a spring pull bar or spring fith-arm is the extra pinion movement changing set angles for better or worse! This sudden change can make or brake a good driver before finding a happy mid point! Jacking on the pinion will give a clue of a middle ground as to setting angles as well as lifting the left side of the car 2-4 inches!

The angle is the difference in the hieghts of the two heims. The shape of the "j-bar" doesn't have anything to do with it. As far as how much, that depends on the car and track. The people I run with use the term "rake" rathe than the angle. It's easier to measure that way.

Thanks everybody for replies and LINKS! Now if somebody talks degrees or rake/split I no how to measure it. As an old fart I know torsion bars, Jacobs ladders, leafsprings ect. With this new to me suspension this season it's going to be a new can of worms I'm opening up! With you'alls help in building and understanding it has rejuvenated this old dogs disturbed passion for dirttrack racing. Can't wait to get it on the track!

I'm a old school guy too and still making it win by keeping things simple! It all makes it's rounds about every seven years and not much has changed in my world of racing! It still goes left and fast and drivable! I only wish my answers were more comprehensible! The more issues I address, the more complex I see racing is and wonder how we came so far to get things this complex to win! A standard of chassis in stock cars and limited mods has been the most fun! I hope B-mod and 3 links can teach racers the how-to-s again! We ran 3 bars against 4 bars and still won! Our limited was faster than 4bar mods at times, all 53 of them at one race! It gets into your blood! Glad to help if I can!
