Is that a 4.3 v6 light weight balancer? Be sure not to leave the old block drain plugs in, some times they are eaten off so as to fall out of the threads! Did you saw the intake between the runners and water ft outlet and plate and foam the under-side? Are you going to go orange? Is there a belt under the timing cover? Do you have a titanium fuel pump rod? Is your oil pump drive going to clear the crank? I hope you have oil restrictors in the rear! Great looking motor and chassis!

Here's my son…"The Rookie"… with the motor after we loaded it today at Competition Specialists. The motor's all wrapped up and ready to go... To answer your questions... A stock damper is required… can't even run an SFI approved damper if you stick with the rules. We have brass plugs in the water drain holes. No mods allowed to the intake… this is the stock intake that came with the motor ('75 truck IIRC) but we have an 055 that we'll test on the dyno. I doubt there will be much difference. We also have a '62 300 HP 327 intake that we might try. Gary @ CS painted the engine black… we were going to go with "as cast" paint but this will be OK. If you get too fancy with the engine too many guys come over to take a peek under the hood… I have never liked that. We have to run a stock timing chain so no timing belts… stock pump pushrod. I have never had any problems with a pump drive clearing the block but it's been over 30 years since I built a SBC myself ('81 to be exact). I'm sure Gary, who assembled the engine, would have caught any problem areas… he's been doing this stuff for 40 years. No oil restrictors that I'm aware of... The basic idea of this build was to put together a WISSOTA-legal package that would have decent HP and good reliability all within a $3500.00 budget…. that includes all the bolt ons, redone carbs, dizzy, etc. We just made it… The engine basics are a 70's 010 truck block, 10/10 cast crank, GM PM rods resized with ARP bolts. Wiseco Pro-True forged pistons (9.7 to 1 with a 67cc chamber) stock ring package. The pistons are .003 in the hole. Cloyes roller chain and gears. Stock small block oil pump. Champ oil pan. Allstar 3/4" shaft short water pump. The heads are Mexican 993's with +.100 2.02/1.60 Si valves, decked .060 (?), bronze guides, K-motion single springs w/damper (115# on seat… 340# on the nose), Crane retainers w/7 degree locks, ARP studs, custom length 3/8" pushrods. MSD Street Fire dizzy. Mike Jones @ Jones Cams did the custom ground cam and provided his special design juice lifters. Al Gouelke in Green Bay is doing two gauge-legal 4412's for us… one is an older Willy's and the other is originally out of Wegner's Race Engines shop. We are going to try to dyno this thing within the next two weeks. The shop where we are going to do this is going to get about a foot of snow this Friday… they will be busy shoveling snow, I'm sure. I'm hoping to see an honest 370-380 HP from this deal… we'll see.

Good looking car. Have faith in your motor builder. If he's been building motors for 40 years probably has some satisfied customers. Be easy on the rookie as we have all been in them shoes at one time! Snow? Me thinks you must be in northern Ohio? I'm in northern Missouri and had snow last week. L.O.L.

L.O.L. I'm in central Wisconsin… we will get a rain/sleet/snow mix on Friday. The shop doing the dyno is in northern WI near Lake Superior… their butts are still buried from the winter. I have a lot of faith in Gary @ Competition Specialists who built this deal. i wanted him to do the machine work and have my son and I do the assembly. Derek wanted to get a turn key engine so we could concentrate on getting the car set-up and to give him some seat time instead of flogging on the motor… good idea. I did some compromising on this build… and so did my engine guy. I wanted to use a lighter piston (Wiseco 2 barrel, Manley or JE) with a metric ring pack. Gary has built dozens of these things with these Pro-Tru Wiseco's with standard rings… he believes the std. rings are better on dirt and will last longer. So I went with his suggestion. Plus he's a long time WD with Wiseco and gave me a good price. We gave up some HP but we still have a good package. I also wanted to try the GM PM LT1 rods. Gary doesn't trust 'em but they seem to be popular in WISSOTA country. The PO of my kid's modified has used them successfully in his engines for several years. I picked up two sets of lightly used rods out of marine engines for $60.00. I didn't want to run any Chi-Com rods… just a personal choice for me. We tried to find a forged crank for this engine but didn't find one we liked or could afford so we used the cast crank. Turns out I had a SBC steel 350 crank in my shop… I thought it was a 327 crank… surprise!!! But I didn't know it was a 350 piece until last night… too late. I got it free with a 327 block. The cam choice was mine… Gary uses a lot of Isky stuff and it's good quality. But I really shy away from off the shelf cams. Mike Jones is a member of another forum I hang out on and he ground a cam that should do the trick for us… just a little different than you'd find in a catalog. Years ago I ran a 351C and I had a free Engle cam that came from my sponsor… I'd run out of power at the flag stand. We blew a motor, and I was broke, so I called Chet Herbert and he sent me a $40.00 regrind that kicked butt and pulled hard until the end of the chute… no more shelf cams for me. One good thing about this whole deal is my son is good friends with the guy who owned this car since it was new. We are going to use his shop to reassemble the car and use his scales to do the first set-up. We have his notes from the last few years. Derek got a crap-load of parts in the deal… tires, wheels, shock, springs and the like… that kind of help is very important especially to a new driver and a crew chief (me!) who last ran IMCA mods almost 30 years ago. Things HAVE changed….

V6 4.3 chevy is stock GM part! The older one of just a hub off of a 265 chevy is all we run! No balancing needed and the belt works as vibration absorber on a NF stock crank! A 400 crank has to have a machined down oil drive to clear! We block off the exhaust cross over under the carb at the gaskets with a thin tin flashing piece of plate glued to the heads before glue-ing the gaskets on! Rear oil restrictors are use to keep more oil down stairs and allows us to adjust .020 off the bottom of hydraulic stock lifters to run like solids and not pump up with less oil pumped using a stock pan with 6 quarts! A snap-in lower valley lifter pan helps keep hot oil off the intake without touching it! Less oil on top lets the heat go in the direction intended to cool better! We ran a belt drive with a stock cover with 260lb springs 20 years ago, turning 8300 RPMs! If they put anything but o-ring valves seals on any of my heads with bronze guides they would bind up the first race or be so loose as not even be true to center either way bending a valve! Steel and no positive seals is the way to go on guides as to longevity! We painted one of our motors black with blue pan and covers and all that did was hurt us black and blue! We never had such a time getting one right! We had to blame it on something! 430-horse was the last and only engine sponsored motor with 1.94-1.60-450 lift stock limited mod .o42 flat top 350 motor we ran but it would not hold a candle to the .066 we were a custom to running! I sent it back in a box 9 times that year, had the heads off 5 times my self for repairs while winning easer with our junk motor! 28 out of 40 in 4 states that year! No more engine sponsors with Dynos for me! Less work to build my own right and run all season most easily! Another 100 horses laying around somewhere close and cheap if you need them I am sure! I love a stock class! I do have a few tips most won't tell but I have! Read all my other post on everything and classes to get more out while staying in! All the little things add up to faster! I wish you a great season!

I'm no fan of bronze guides… I have iron in the supercharged Hemi I built a few years ago. But this is built with 'em so that's what we are running.
And I agree about o-rings on the intakes and none on the exhaust but Gary uses a simple umbrella seal that has worked good for him. Another place where I trust his judgement.
We can't run just a hub… somebody will cry about it for sure. I'll check out the 4.3 damper though.
One thing about the shop that built this engine… it's a working mans shop. The place smells like cutting oil and mineral spirits. Gary has all sorts of various engines around that he's building… Ford modulars, a 348, Hemi's, a nailhead Buick and such… I like that. He's trusted to build race engines and truck pull motors… Hondas and Hemi's. A lot of experience in that joint...

No thin steel ring for me either! I like cast as to the heat factor sooner or later! 305 x rods are what I like if I can find a matching set or get them pinged! A 327 is the 350 block if large journal! A NF cast crank with the front rod nipple and not drilled is 4 lbs. lighter, more flexible and stronger at high rpms than stock steel cranks! 305 cranks are the same as 350s but have a little difference in the throw balance because of piston and rod weight! I try to balance things out to match the extra load of compression if extra is used but I like lower compression to build more power on pump gas! The expansion rates of fuels is better that way and the lack there of turns easier! I wish I knew more about how this works but it just wins so I go with most any logical thing I can come up with as to horses and set-ups! I just wish I could get my biscuits to turn out like my wife's grandmother's did! She showed me time and time again! She is gone now and her biscuits are too! I hope to leave some things behind as well to be remembered for racing and after winning so much it all came so easy as to look back and say how! Common sense is all I used and never took anything for granted! I was born with a wrench in my hand and speed in my heart! Snow in Louisiana! Its been at least 3 weeks sense any fell! 24 degrees a couple of weeks ago and 82 tomorrow! I cut more fire wood today just in case the Easter bunny is still wearing his long johns and coveralls when he shows up! I haven't had to build a fire all week so far! We will pay for this cool when it gets hot down hear! The air down here is so humid, I'm making Hydrogen out of condensation in my motor pulling it through with the magnetism of my alternator with a simple gismo I constructed in 5 minutes! It is quite the boost on my 4 banger, so I don't have to mash so hard and it does save gas unless raining! Then my battery one of 5 amps takes over. A little of that goes a long way! I am still on my first quart of water after 6 months! Wake up America! All that snow is clean fuel too you guys! By now you should know that I am not kidding! Do some research! A 30 power boost and 70 MPG Amazement when correct! A few magnets in the right places on your auto can move static air like shooting a watermelon seed forward after three sunny days of charge! It too does not work when raining but the average is very worth while! I would love to put this on a dirt car but then they would think I always cheated and we never had too!

Krooser,Be wary of those upper Wisconsinites. L.O.L. We have a commen ground in that I also quit racing in the 80s and got back into it last summer with my son. We share driving chores So I guess you could call us a 30somthing rookie and a 60somthing has been/wantabe with 2 part time crewchiefs! We butte heads occasionally but are making lifetime memories. I built my own motor but it kinda made it hecktic getting car ready. Motor made it thru the season so it's good to go this year. Gave me time to concentrate on upgrading the car this winter. Wish you success this season in racing and memories. VintageMod B.T.W. I have a friend who lives in Oshkosh that I try to visit each winter to do some HARDWATER fishing. We take our old V.W. busses with built in wood stoves and trap doors in the floor and park them on the lake. Hey, fish & chips & a good Wisconsin beer. Gotta get your mind off racing once in awhile.

My kid's a Yooper having spent 99% of his life in the UP. I moved back to WI in the early 80's… now i live about 50 miles NW of Oshkosh. I also have an old POS Malibu street stock in my shop. It has a MOPAR 318 in it right now, and I have a 330 Olds half done for it. But it looks like I'll TRY to run it this year with a 327 scabbed together from swap meet and yard sale parts. The old VW bus deal sounds like fun. I have a decent ice fishing lake two block from my house but I'm not much on sitting on a 5 gallon bucket looking at tip-ups all day.

The only chip I use is the one I glue to the bottom of the drivers shoe so he can be sure to use all the travel in the pedal! She goes or she blows! I run too high of a gear and pick up speed faster in the pulling range of the cam, where ever that is! Flow keeps it from getting tight on top end with no power valve leaning it back when out of a strain and building vacuum or not flat on the floor if cruising in first place! Lifting is hard on lean engines so I flood it to cool it down going in and hook coming off! When it cleans to lean, its like a NITRO boost any time with out using the pedal, pumping keeping it fed or on the other end! They look for the switch every time! Test our fuel to no end! It's the coil fire power and timing change to the fuel ratio that wakes the sleeping beast! I use junk .066 350 motors, low compression, 150 degrees temps, pump gas and this to gain a bunch of horses easily! It gets plum wicked fast but needs all my attention constantly to keep in check with air temps and moisture changing so much! The edge of lean is horses but is a tight rope to walk! Takes twice the fuel and air when freezing in the intake and makes twice the compression when burning, making longer power strokes and using the stock stroke crank with the stock rod angle swing as gear ratio against the crank! It's a zinger, sounds like 10 grand at the flag stand but still pulling hard all the way going in! Give it a try but do your home work first! Check out all my horse power post as to not blowing your good engine with compression of over 150 lbs! No racing fuel used! A cam degree advancement and valve adjustments to obtain extra vacuum to vaporize the fuel, a better exhaust closing number, 150 temp to cause refrigeration to get more torque may be needed to make this work! Good luck on the dyno!
