Im running a 79 monte carlo on a 3/8 mid banked dry slick track, with a 350/turbo 350 in first gear. I want to be right around 6000rpm. I just picked up a ford 9in and wondering what gears i should be running in it.

What gear is in the rear end? Run the trans in 2nd or high. 350 in 2nd and 4.11's is a 5.13 final. 350 in 2nd and 4.30's is a 6.45 final gear. if you can get a gear for the 9" 6.25 put all the heat in the rear end. There will be many opinions. This is just mine. Moly

I would suggest a 5.73 gear. That is based on running tranny in 3rd gear ( 1to1 ratio ) with a 82" cirf. tire at 6000 rpm. Now comes the fun! If you run tranny in 2nd gear it has a 1.52 to 1 ratio , in 1st gear it has a 2.52 to 1 ratio. You will have to figure out the math equastion to come up with the right rear gear. Your adjustment for tire size difference would be --- 82"divided by 5.73 = 14.31064 ----- your tire size divided by 14.31064 = new rear gear ratio. So what i'm saying is do the math to covert 5.73 to your tire cirf. to come up with your ratio in 3rd gear. Then do the math to convert that ratio to running in 1st or 2nd gear in tranny. Sorry I don't no how to do that. Good Luck=== phantom 309
